Do Neuropathy Supplements Work? What Is and Is Not Supported

Quick answer

Do neuropathy supplements work? It depends on the cause. A B12 shortfall can cause numbness, and correcting a deficiency is a medical step. Alpha-lipoic acid had mixed results: 3 of 8 studies reported improvement. Nervecept contains neither, and its eight lines, 699 mg in all, have no neuropathy trial.

Does vitamin B12 matter for neuropathy?

Yes, when a B12 deficiency is the cause. Numbness and tingling in the hands and feet can occur with B12 deficiency, even without anemia (NIH ODS, Vitamin B12).

The adult RDA is 2.4 mcg. Metformin and acid-reducing drugs can lower B12 (NIH ODS, Vitamin B12). A blood test, ordered by a doctor, settles whether it is your cause.

NINDS lists B12 deficiency among causes, and says fixing the cause can sometimes allow nerves to recover (NINDS, Peripheral Neuropathy). That is a medical finding, not a capsule claim. B12 is not on the Nervecept label.

Does alpha-lipoic acid help neuropathy?

The evidence is inconsistent. A 2022 review of 8 studies found 3 reporting symptom improvement and 5 not (NCCIH, Diabetes and Dietary Supplements).

It is the one supplement NCCIH discusses for diabetic nerve pain. NCCIH also says not to replace medical diabetes treatment with an unproven product (NCCIH, Diabetes and Dietary Supplements).

Alpha-lipoic acid is not an ingredient in Nervecept.

How do Nervecept's eight lines compare?

They are different lines with different research, and none is a neuropathy study.

A diagnosis. Causes include diabetes, vitamin shortfalls, alcohol, some medicines and infections, and often none is found (MedlinePlus, Peripheral Neuropathy).

See a doctor for new, spreading or worsening numbness, weakness, balance trouble or a foot sore you cannot feel. Keep taking prescribed medicine. Check the label lines and the shellfish (crayfish) allergen before buying.

FAQ01

Nervecept questions people ask

Can B12 supplements fix neuropathy?

Only when low B12 is the cause, and a doctor should confirm that with a test. NIH notes numbness and tingling can occur with B12 deficiency. Other causes need other care, so do not guess.

Is alpha-lipoic acid in Nervecept?

No. The label lists glucosamine sulfate, Indian frankincense, chondroitin sulfate, turmeric, quercetin, methionine, MSM and bromelain. Alpha-lipoic acid and B12 are not among the eight lines.

Do neuropathy supplements replace medicine?

No. NCCIH says not to replace medical treatment with an unproven product. Keep taking prescribed medicine, and tell your doctor about any supplement you add.
